For many years, the Kiwanis Club of San Marcos, Texas has sponsored a patriotic program to place American flags in the community. The purpose of the program is to proudly display our flag on National holidays and to raise funds for the club. The designated holidays are: Memorial Day, Flag Day, Independence Day, Patriot's Day, Election Day, Veteran's Day, Martin Luther King Day, and Presidents’ Day.  In the event of rainout days, the flags will be put up on Labor Day or Columbus Day, as alternative dates.

The Kiwanis Club of San Marcos purchases flags and staffs and installs them on holidays for an annual fee of $50.00.  The funds collected in this effort are used to fund the San Marcos Public Library Children's Summer Reading Program.  Members of the club are volunteers and are assigned a route of 6-12 business locations. In addition, flags are placed around the Hays County Courthouse and at downtown locations.

An annual drive to renew sponsorship and to solicit new participants is held in the spring months.   Those Kiwanis members who are currently involved in putting out flags:  Penny Slavik, Del Brown, Rick Pickering, Gary Nelson, Lon Shell, Moe Johnson, John Roppolo, James Collier, Charles Johnson, Jeanne and Doug Balkman.
