San Marcos Kiwanis Club Newsletter, Jan. 30, 2025
Many thanks to Kristi for taking the photo, taking notes, taking attendance and giving me the hard copies that Rachel passed out at the meeting. Kristi is not into excessive notetaking like I am so the newsletter will be shorter than usual. I am sure this will be a welcome change for anyone who reads the newsletters.

REPORTS:
Lon wants everyone to be more active taking care of the camp.

PROGRAM:
San Marcos River conservation has been around for 40 years.

The river used to look like a marsh and had many dams for energy but they are trying to take them down for better water flow.

In the 50's and 60's people would not swim in it because it was dirty and overgrown and people would get ear infections.

The City of San Marcos will be charging non-residents for river use.

Rachel said the Sierra club sued the state to control the amount of water leaving the aquifer. They were afraid they wouldn't be able to protect the rivers because the state is mainly conservative.

The San Marcos salamander and wild rice survived extinction by preservation as they only live here. There are many endangered species along the river.

A pamphlet for the 2025 Annual Member's Meeting Notice for the San Marcos River Foundation's 40th Anniversary was handed out which has many reports on the work and progress being done to take care of the river.

UPCOMING PROGRAMS:
Feb. 6th: Marian and Henry Oles, The Old Mill and its history in San Marcos
Feb. 13th: Service Dogs Organization, Sheri Soltes
Feb. 20th: Kiwanis Good Citizen Camp Update

Humor and Musings:
“Life is like a camera. Focus on the good times, develop from the negatives, and if things don’t work out, take another shot.”

“I’ve reached the age where my brain goes from ‘you probably shouldn’t say that’ to ‘what the heck, let’s see what happens.’”

“Remember, you don’t have to attend every argument you’re invited to.”
