1. Our first meeting at the San Marcos Public Library was a big success! Kristi provided grilled chicken and pinwheel sandwiches, for lunch, along with chips, cookies, grapes, and cherry pie. Thank you, Rick Pickering, Penny Slavik, and Jennifer Richmond for the $10.00 contribution, to help pay for the lunch. It is the hope that lunch can be provided for future meetings, as well, if each attending member can also pay $10.00.
Meeting at the Public Library showed great possibilities for increasing membership, too. We were very pleased to host 2 Library patrons, that had been sitting in the open area. Thank you, Kristi Dame and Jennifer, for making it possible to use the library facilities.
2.Trivia Run prize drawing tickets: Unfortunately, due to an address mix-up, the Kiwanis Club was not able to visit with many trivia participants, thereby, not able to get many donations for the Disaster Backpacks. Kristi Dame brought sheets of the drawing tickets, with her, and several members were given these sheets, with the hope of selling the chance of winning the Jeep backpack or hands-on time with wild mustangs. Each drawing ticket costs $10.00, and the proceeds go towards supplies for the Disaster Backpacks. The ticket drawing will take place on Oct. 29, 2026.
3. Shannon West: We were thrilled to have Shannon West, from the San Marcos Newspaper, visit our club meeting today. She was interested in learning more about the upcoming Texas Airshow, as well as the organization that leads this event.
PROGRAM
Wings and Warriors and the Upcoming Airshow
Tim Scherer and Joe Conway are both members of the Wings and Warriors organization.
For many people, the path of life may be guided by people we know, interests in areas of learning, or by simple luck. For Tim Shererer, he discovered his passion for starting up Wings and Warriors, through a series of eye opening, and traumatic events.
Tim's career began when he joined the military and became a pilot. He knew that many soldiers battled PTSD, sometime ending in suicide, but the treatment wasn't always available. He recalls knowing one particular soldier that went into the VA hospital, seeking help, and then walked outside, and shot himself. Tim was in disbelief that this soldier was unable to receive the help that was needed, and he was determined to do something to eradicate this problem. For his birthday, that year, he asked his family to help him raise money to start a foundation to help soldiers dealing with PTSD.
Tim organized the Wings and Warrior program, in 2017, following a trauma in his own life. After leaving the military, he started flying planes for Delta Airlines, and one day, he was heading home, when he was notified by a friend that his house had just been struck by lightning, and was destroyed by fire. Thankfully, he had a small suitcase packed with a few clothing items, but his wife and child lost everything. This trauma was the guiding factor that has molded his life and priorities.
In 2019, Tim started helping with the Disabled Warriors organization and committed his own "Wings and Warriors to be a branch of this organization.
Tim loved classic cars and held fundraisers to bring in money for veterans and first responders. 2 years ago, he helped to organize the Texas Airshow. The money brought in has greatly helped people suffering with PTSD, as well as Complex PTSD (memory loss sometimes occurs during an incident).
Nov. 7-8, 2026, is slated to be their next airshow, and it will be held at our own San Marcos Airport. In order to pull off this event, there is a great need for community volunteers. You can go on-line to TEXASCAPITALAIRSHOW.COM, to find ways to help.
Thank you, Tim and Joe, for your commitment to helping people! They know the battle personally and can show that it is something that can be overcome!
