ANNOUNCEMENTS:
1. Cheryl Petre has finished writing the thank you notes for all those that sponsored or donated items for the Cornhole Tournament. Cheryl shared the names and organizations to the club, and it was a very impressive list! Thank you, Cheryl, for taking on the task of getting the written notes out.
2. Jennifer Richmond shared news that Jessica Rodriguez was recently admitted into the hospital. She wasn't sure if Jessica was still in the hospital, but prayers are definitely welcome!
3. Scholarship recipients have received their awards. Below are the names of these recipients, and the money they were awarded by the club:
Thomas DeLaCruz- $1200 Layla Arredondo- $1000
Jackson Murphree- $800 Merilee Olson- $500
Jackson Boren- $500 Lukas Wagner- $500
4. Funeral: The funeral service for Gary Nelson's wife, Sherry, was held right after our Kiwanis meeting at First United Methodist Church. It was a beautiful service. Thank you, Kristin Wingard, for making arrangements to get a flower arrangement delivered from the Kiwanis Club.
REPORTS:
1. Scholarship Recognition Social: A social is planned for June 6, 2026, from 11:00-1:00 at the McBride Wilson Kiwanis Camp. Willie Garza plans to purchase and grill the food, and all San Marcos Kiwanis members are asked to bring side dishes or desserts. Vanessa Westbrook has sent out an email invitation to each scholarship recipient and their families, so it is important that we have as many Kiwanians as possible to attend this event. If you have any questions, you can contact Cheryl Petre or Jennifer Richmond.
a. It is important to note that if we want any food donations from Sams, they ask that we submit the request 30 days before the event, so that is something to remember for future events.
2. H.O.M.E. event is scheduled for June 6, 2026, from 10:00-4:00. This is happening simultaneously with our social, so if you wish to help with the Kiwanis booth, instead, or after the social, please let Jennifer Richmond know
3. Rona Walton, chairman of the grant writing committee, gave an update on the Hays County Social Service Grant. She stated that the grant is almost ready for submission, and the committee is asking for $43,000. If awarded, several renovations are planned for the McBride Wilson Kiwanis Camp. The property has some restrictions, according to Lon Shell, concerning the property on a flood zone area, restricting buildings. The committee will discuss this matter with Chase Dame to see if there are ways to work around this restriction.
4. The Good Citizen Camp was very successful this past week! They had a great group of kids, and increased in numbers, throughout the week. August's session proves to be just as successful, as there are already 21 kids that are confirmed to attend.
5. Flag Program Update: Rick Pickering shared that the placing of flags on Memorial Day went well, and that LaCima has paid for 100 flags to be displayed. That is 18 more than previous times. Grins Restaurant is a new customer, and we are only missing renewal from three previous customers.
6. Rick Pickering will be leading the program this week. He will be explaining the ins and outs of Kiwanis Engage and Club runner. This will benefit both new and not so new members, as both of these are very useful in keeping track of club membership, club offered programs and contact with other members. If you have ever had questions about Kiwanis, this program will be a great resource.
7. Committee Development: Penny Slavik has created a form that will be used to document roles and responsibilities of each committee. More on this at a later time.
