San Marcos Kiwanis Club Newsletter, Oct. 8, 2026
CLUB BUSINESS:

1.  Grins Restaurant:  Our meeting, this week, was held at Grin's Restaurant.  We felt that it was important to personally thank the restaurant for housing our club for so many years.  Kristi Dame provided a delicious cake, covered in chocolate frosting and M&M's, and Grin's was very pleased.

2. San Marcos Public Library:  This week, we will be meeting at the San Marcos Public Library, for a "Meet and Greet" with the librarians and volunteers, and we will assist in setting up the room for the library's used book sale.  Kristi Dame will bring finger food and snacks, for our lunch.  Remember to wear your name tag.

3. Future lunches during meeting:  Currently, Kristi Dame is bringing sandwiches, finger foods, and other lunch type of food, for club members.  In order to help with the expenses, we ask club members to donate $10.00, each week.  Discussion is made to use money from the administration fund, previously used to buy lunch for guest's and speakers, but it has not been voted on, by the Board of Directors, yet.  It has been agreed upon that guests will be fed once without paying, but will need to pay $10.00 if they are returning guests.

Drinks may not be provided, so it is encouraged that members bring their own drink to the meeting.

An additional note:  if any member would like to provide the lunch, on any given day, please let Kristi know, in advance.

4.  Contract between the Public Library, City of San Marcos, and Kiwanis Club:  Now that our club is meeting at the Public Library, we are basically partnering with them, and the City of San Marcos.  Kristi read, aloud, the agreement we are making with the two organizations.  In the contract, the Kiwanis Club will be required to host at least one children's event, to be held at the library.  It has been decided that the club will host a BUG (Bring Up Grades) day and will plan a variety of activities.  As part of the contract, the library will help to advertise any activity, so that will help greatly with the program's success, and it will give the club more coverage in the community.

It is important to note that the San Marcos Kiwanis Club will be working more closely with kids.  That being said, each member will need to be up to date with the required background check needed by the City of San Marcos.  Rick Pickering will provide a link to access the site, so it will be very important to get this done, as soon as possible.  Getting certified with the youth protection training will need to be updated, also.

The contract will be made available, soon, for the members to read through it.

5.  Veteran's Day Parade:  Veteran's Day parade will occur on Nov. 7, 2026, and Lon Shell will need help with different tasks.  Kristi Dame has asked the 4-H club to assist as well.  Please check with Lon, to see how you can help.  Lon plans to provide a detailed list of things that need to be done.

6.  Texas Airshow:  The Texas Airshow will take place on Nov. 7-8, 2026, with set up occurring on the day before and the day after.  They are still looking for volunteers to help with this event.  Go online to texascapitalairshow.com to sign up.  The San Marcos Kiwanis Club will be permitted to set up a booth, at the airshow, to promote/ get donations for the disaster backpacks.  Penny Slavik, Jennifer Richmon, and Chase Dame have agreed to man the booth.

7.  Pancakes with Santa:  This event will take place on Saturday, Dec. 5, 2026, at the First United Methodist Church, from 8:00-11:30, and we will need full club participation, as we have in year's past.  Rick Pickering received the list of all the sponsors that Jesse Ramos had gathered and may send out an e-mail requesting sponsorship to help with Santa and general needs.  This year, the club will bring back the silent auction, as well.  If you can donate items to help with the auction, it would be greatly appreciated!

HUMOR AND MUSING:

The San Marcos Public Library began as a club library in 1918. In 1964 the library became a department of the City of San Marcos. For over 25 years, the library was located at 310 West Hutchison Street. In January 1994, the library moved to its current location at 625 East Hopkins Street. In May 2017, the library was included in a city bond election to expand the Hopkins Street location. 77% voted to support library expansion and provide $14.75 million. Construction was completed in May 2021. Residents of Hays County and children in the San Marcos school district boundaries enjoy using this fresh, new space. Although the majority of funding for the library comes from the City of San Marcos, Hays County has allocated funds to the library for over 30 years. The Friends of the Library 501(c)3 also support the efforts of the library.
