       A. Penny Slavik has written a "Committee Guideline " document for    committees to fill in.  This will organize procedures, goals, policies, and any other information needed to organize that committee, in a more efficient manner.  Currently, she is contacting past committee participants, so the participants are up-to-date, and that each committee has a chairman.  Once this is done, it has been recommended that the chairman begin the fill in process and then pass it on to the participants within that committee.  A repetitive complaint, over the years has been that few members know the procedures for the committee to be effective.  Hopefully, this will help answer any questions that may arise.  Please check your emails, texts, and missed phone calls to help Penny get this process done quickly.

 

       B.  Sponsor Form:  Jennifer Richmond proposed using a sponsor form, to be filled out, whenever a sponsor has been signed up.  This will make it easier to follow up and clarify who has agreed to sponsor an event.  This proposed form will contain a due date for payment which will be prior to recognition and advertising.

 

       C.  Bylaws:  The bylaw's addition and addendum have been sent out, via email.  Please check your emails.  The club will vote on these items in 2 weeks.  This vote needs to come from the entire club membership.

 

       D.  The board approved a $200 contribution request that came from the San Marcos Art League for "Art Squared".

 

       E.  Several items were tabled:  These items will be addressed at next month's meeting, due to low attendance needed for votes.  The board is in need for several new members.  Please consider signing up to be on the board.  The need for a quorum, as well as member's reaching the end of their term, has left many vacancies.  The board meets 1x a month for approximately an hour and a half.  Your commitment once monthly can make a positive impact on the club and Foundation, and by extension, our community!

 

2.  Chamber Business Expo:  Rick Pickering, Penny Slavik, Kristi Dame, and Jennifer Richmond worked the table at the Embassy Suites' Chamber event. It was a lot of fun!  Many Kiwanians dropped by, including Moe Johnson, Rona Watson, Kristin Wingard, and Vanessa Westbrook.  We were able to visit with a lot of people, received donations for the Disaster Backpacks, received names for interested members, and got some businesses interested in putting on a program for our club.  With so many prospects, and offers, it definately shows a major need for someone to step forward as chairman for the membership committee.  Please consider filling this position.     

 

 

 

 

Harley Slavik began his program by defining "Era".  He explained that it is a certain point of time that has a specific focus. He continued to explain that he has always had a special interest in the musical past, and he explained that he shares that type of music every Friday afternoon from 2:00pm-4:00 pm on our local radio station; KZSM.   His show, "Music Throwbacks" is the name of his program.

 

Harley talked about the different eras of music, starting with the 30's and finishing with the 2o20's.

 

Harley explained that the 30's-40's music was influenced by World War II, and the lives' of the servicemen.  Big Bands along with Tommy Dorcey, Glenn Miller, and the Andrew's Sisters were musicians of interest.  Moving forward, he explained that the 50's and early 60's were the "Baby Boomer's phase, and with that came Do-Wop music and Rock and Roll music.  Televisions started to show up in living rooms, and people could listen to Elvis Presley, Chuck Barry, the Platters, and American Bandstand.

 

The 60's started a new type of music, some very loud, and disturbing.  It was the "Heavy Metal" featuring the Rolling Stones and Black Sabbath.  Many songs of the 60's were songs of protest, influenced by the Civil Rights Movement, the Vietnam War, and the British Invasion. Joining the heavy metal artists, on the chart, were groups such as Creedance Clear Water Revival, Jackson 5, and the Beatles. Vinyl records were popular.  The 70's brought changes to the way people listened to music.  Disco and Rock and Roll, as well as movie soundtracks were genres of choice, and Saturday Night Fever, Urban Cowboy, and music from Grease became very popular.  Vinyl records began diminishing, and people started listening to music on car formats like 8 tracks, and cassette tapes.

 

Harley went on to explain that the 80's was known for Hair Metal performed by Def Leopard and Poison.  The introduction of synthesizer pop music started trending, and cassette music pushed 8 tracks out.  Disco became stronger and groups like Bee Gees, Kool and the Gang, and Michael Jackson became household names.  The introduction of CD formats, and MTV became a big game changer increasing Michael Jackson's popularity.  The 90's caused cassette tapes to diminish, and vinyl records to become obsolete.  CDs were everywhere, and people loved the compressed sound that CDs brought. The 90's brough the Grunddge Movement and the Euro Dance, and Nirvana came on to the charts.

 

Finally, the 2000's had many technology breakthroughs.  Soundtracks like Men in Black and Disney movies were put onto IPODS and M3 players, and online streaming allowed people to buy individual songs.  Once online streaming took over the music industry, the need for CD's and other physical music formats were no longer being used, as much. The surge of online streaming became so intense that in the 201o's and 2020's people began yearning for more physical formats, and vinyl began making an appearance again, partly because companies found it was cheaper to produce vinyl, and it was easier to step back in time to the "Oldies".  Now that we are in the 2020's, the types of music are music enjoyed by music of the past.

 

Harley concluded his presentation by quoting "What was old is now new again."
