SAN MARCOS KIWANIS CLUB NEWSLETTER, June 11, 2026
Several Kiwanis members showing off donated snacks from H.O.M.E.; and organization that reaches out to help homelessness needs.  These donated snacks will be used during the August Good Citizen Camp.  Any ideas on who might belong to the extra hand and bunny ears?

ANNOUNCEMENTS AND REPORTS:

1.  Scholarship Social:  Many thanks go out to Willie Garza for his excellent grilling of hamburgers and hotdogs.  His many talents also include homemade potato salad, as well.  Willie, you are a man of many talents!

12 people were in attendance and there were many side dishes to choose from, so no one left hungry!  Layla Arredondo, our $1000 scholarship recipient came with her mother.  Layla has some very clear goals in mind for the future, and plans to get into the health field.

Hopefully, more scholarship recipients can attend next summer!

2.  Public Library program has been rescheduled for July 30th.  Thank you, Kristi Dame, for volunteering, at the last minute to share a program in their place.

3.  H.O.M.E. is an organization that provides resources for those who have found themselves without a place to live.  They held an event on the same day as the Scholarship Social, and Kristi and Chase Dame set up a booth, at this event, to advertise Kiwanis.  At the end of the show, H.O.M.E. donated their left-over snacks to be used at the next Good Citizen's Camp.

4.  Fundraiser for Foster Village in Buda:  Rona Walton shared that she planned to spend her birthday participating in the Ladies Lemonade Soire, where proceeds will go to Foster Village.  Foster Village provides services and resources for both foster kids and foster families.  Rona shared that people could help, at any time, donating supplies or money donations.  If interested, there is a venmo account at Ronacollects.

PROGRAM
Kristi Dame shows off poster of funny things people said during camp.
Kristi Dame gave an excellent program on how the session one, Good Citizen Camp came out.  Attendance was great, and they added extra kids during the week.  The kids learned many skills that will help them throughout their life including coping skills, perseverance skills, and self-image skills. Throughout the week, she and her committee scheduled speakers, activities, and free time.  Kristi commented that the kids were so engaged that cell phones never came out.

Some of the speakers that presented were:
         1.  A Tibet woman that brought sound bowls, and taught ways to relax.
         2.  The pastor from New Zion Church,
         3.  Joey from Green Guy- kids talked about careers
         4.  Chase Dame and a friend modeled and practiced ways to present                      yourself during a job interview.
         5.  Yoga Instructor- healthy relaxation
         6. Alley Medical- brought individual first aid kits, and taught
              elementary medical assistance.

Kristi shared bringing in an additional horse, this year.  The kids are able to spend 2 hours daily with the horses, and are encouraged, during this time to regulate themself in ways to show horses that they have confidence and trust, thereby allowing the horses to feel confidence and trust.  These activities help the camper get along with other people throughout their lives.

In future camp sessions, Kristi hopes to include members from the National Guard, and the Medical Explorers.

Kristi was very pleased with the attendance and the positive feedback she has seen and heard.  She attributes reaching out to churches to let them know about the camp, as a positive factor, and has heard many comments from parents on the positive ways their kids have changed, after attending the camp.  When hearing these reviews, she knows that her goals of helping kids learn how to communicate effectively, and becoming leaders in the community, has been achieved!

Thanks go out to the members on or assisted with this Kiwanis committee.  That list includes Kristi Dame, Chase Dame, Lon Shell, Jennifer Richmond, Emily Sousa, and Susie Hernandez.

HUMOR AND MUSING:

  • The word “camp” is derived from the Latin word “campo,” meaning “field.”
  • Camping can improve mood and reduce stress by increasing exposure to natural light and decreasing exposure to artificial light.
  • The world’s smallest tent fits in your pocket: The “Tentsile Flite” is an ultralight, two-person tree tent that weighs just 3.5 pounds and packs down to the size of a water bottle, making it a favorite for hardcore backpackers.

Knock, knock.
Who’s there?
Water.
Water who?
Water you waiting for? Let’s hit the lake!
