We had a several guests today. Sandy came with Glen. Debby Lawrence with the Bluebonnet Lion's Club came to take orders for their annual nuts sale. Jessica Rodriguez, a possible new member, also visited today.
REPORTS:
Next week's meeting is celebration day for birthdays and an anniversary. McBride Wilson, Emily Sousa and Sandi Ellen are having birthdays and Kristin and husband James are celebrating their anniversary.
There is no program for Sept. 18th. although Susie will update us on the 5K Pumpkin Dash progress.
Club members present voted on the new Bylaws. Charles made the motion to accept the Bylaws. The motion passed. The Bylaws will now be submitted to Kiwanis International for their final approval.
Rick said we need a coordinator for programs for the new fiscal year. The position involves contacting potential speakers, setting up a meeting date for them to attend and finding out what they may need as far as equipment for their preentation. This is something anyone can work into their own schedule as it does not involve group meetings. If members will help by recommending speakers with contact numbers that will take some of the pressure off of one person trying to fill the calendar. Please do consider volunteering for this.
Charles invited everyone to attend the Hays County Emergency Preparedness Fair this Saturday, the 13th, at La Verde Park in Kyle from
10:00 to 5:00. Quoting from the San Marcos Daily Record: "The free, family-friendly event brings together emergency responders, community organizations, and vendors to help residents prepare for natural or man-made disasters. The fair offers hands-on training, safety demonstrations, preparedness resources, live music, food, raffles, a Top Dawg Chili Cook-Off and more."
Lon has cancelled the Sept. 20th camp workday. He has worked at the camp six times of late so has everything in good shape for the time being. Road base is spread, low hanging tree limbs are cut off, and miscellaneous other maintenance is done.
PROGRAM: Kylie Cox and Jade Dimitri from CASA of Central Texas informed us about the Court Appointed Special Advocate program that began in 1977 in Seattle. There are now nearly 1000 programs nationwide with 74 programs here in Texas. Coldwell, Guadalupe, Comal and Hays counties all have their own. These counties currently have 189 trained community members who volunteer to help caseworkers. They need more, though. There is a 42 hour training program. Volunteers are assigned one or two casees at a time and always work with a caseworker. The purpose is to help a child and their family by advocating for their safety and well-being while in foster care and are court appointed by a judge. CASA volunteers stay by the the child's side during their time in foster care. If you are interested in volunteering, you will find more information at CASAcentex.org.
